Secure Computing Tips

These are the basics. Human error is the leading cause of issues related to viruses, but lets face it - there are bad guys out there. The bad guys generally only target broadband connections, so if you are dialing to get to the net, then you have less to worry about. Basic virus protection will do you well. However, with a broadband connection and even wireless, you need to take more precautions. Start here!

  1. Get VIRUS protection. Use one of these products and keep it updated! McAfee, Symantec (Norton), Trend Micro. You can always do a Google search to find better prices online - but educate yourself at the manufacturers site. Can generally get a version just a step lower than the most recent for less than $20, and you still get the recent updates for a year.

  2. Get a FREE personal Firewall or buy the versions that come with the anti virus software. Check out our Tech Links for more info on the Free utilities available.

  3. Install a router. This will give you Firewall protection and allow for broadband Internet connection sharing. With wireless prices dropping, a good router and supporting hardware can be had for around $100. We recommend Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link. Again, do a Google Search or check out our Tech Links page.

  4. Use spyware removal tools and pop-up blockers. See our Tech Links page.

Wireless Security

When you get your wireless device installed DO NOT keep the factory default settings. There are 4 major changes you need to make:

  1. Establish an ADMIN password - this is usually blank when received.

  2. Create a unique SSID (see your manual).

  3. Stop broadcasting your SSID. There is a setting for this in all these wireless routers.

  4. Enable 128 or 256 bit WEP encryption (see your manual). This will slow transmission a little, but unless you are moving large files you speed will still be faster than your Internet connection.

  5. Enable WPA security if available on your equipment. This is much more secure than standard WEP
